Meet Nicki · Founder, Executive DirectorI built a career inside the system. I won’t pretend it was neutral.
Twenty-five years in corporate leadership, and still in it. What I know about the room, I learned from sitting in it.
Nicki Bland — Founder & Executive Leadership Consultant, , The Action ImperativeThe jobThe operator leaders call when growth, risk, talent and execution must move as one.
That is the job I have done for twenty-five years, and it is the same job I do now — only the room is smaller and the stakes are personal rather than commercial.
How I got hereStill inside it. Still visibly myself.
Twenty-five years in corporate leadership. Currently a Vice President at a defense-sector government contractor — still inside it, still delivering, still visibly myself.
I have run enterprise functions inside two-billion-dollar organizations. Built contracts teams from nothing and handed them on stronger than I found them. Shaped a pipeline of nearly seventy billion. Cut an award cycle from four weeks to two days, because the old one was costing us people as well as time.
None of that is why women hire me. They hire me because I know precisely what it costs to be the only woman in the room and still be the one holding the numbers.
I learned to edit myself early. Read the room, manage up, soften the delivery, hit the target anyway. It worked, which is exactly the problem — the system rewards the editing until the day it doesn’t, and by then you have quietly filed away the part of you that made you worth promoting.
The tattoos are not a rebellion. They are a record of what I decided stays visible. I have never covered them for a meeting, and I have never lost one because of them.

Adjectives are cheap in this industry. These are not.
Why the phoenixNot spectacle.
A reckoning.
A phoenix’s rise isn’t a burst of spectacle. It’s a reckoning.
When it rises, it isn’t performing. It’s proving exactly what it survived.
Women don’t need to prove themselves worthy of the room. The room needs a reckoning with what leadership looks like when we show up whole.
The Action Imperative started because I kept meeting women who had done everything right and still felt themselves disappearing. Not underperforming. Disappearing. There is a difference, and almost nobody names it out loud.
